Kerala Begins Feasibility Study for Airstrips in Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod

The Kerala government has initiated a techno-economic feasibility study to evaluate the development of new airstrips in the districts of Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod. The proposed initiative is part of the state’s long-term strategy to strengthen regional connectivity, improve emergency response capabilities and support balanced infrastructure development across remote and hilly regions.

The feasibility study will examine whether the three districts can support airstrips capable of handling small aircraft and helicopters. These facilities are expected to play an important role in providing faster access during medical emergencies, disaster management operations and other critical situations where road connectivity remains challenging.

To ensure a comprehensive evaluation, the Kerala government has appointed Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) as the project management consultant. Engineering consultancy firm RITES has partnered with KIIFCON, which was selected through a competitive tendering process, to carry out the detailed techno-economic assessment.

The study will evaluate technical feasibility, project costs, operational requirements, environmental considerations and long-term financial viability before the government takes a final decision on implementation.

If approved, the proposed airstrips could significantly improve accessibility to some of Kerala’s most geographically isolated regions. Apart from enhancing emergency services, the infrastructure is expected to promote tourism by making destinations in Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod easier to reach for domestic and international visitors.

Improved air connectivity could also create new opportunities for local businesses, hospitality operators and investors while supporting economic growth in these districts. Better transportation infrastructure is expected to encourage investment, generate employment and strengthen regional development.

The proposal reflects Kerala’s growing focus on modernising transport infrastructure beyond conventional road and rail networks. As connectivity becomes increasingly important for economic competitiveness and public services, regional aviation infrastructure is emerging as a key area of investment.

Once the feasibility report is completed, the Kerala government will review its recommendations before deciding on the next phase of the project. If implemented, the proposed airstrips could become a significant milestone in expanding the state’s aviation infrastructure while improving connectivity, disaster preparedness and sustainable regional development.
