Karnataka has approved port and shipyard projects involving an estimated investment of ₹7,247 crore, marking a significant addition to the state’s maritime infrastructure pipeline and its plans to expand industrial activity along the Arabian Sea coast.
The largest project among the approved developments is the proposed ₹6,925 crore port and shipyard project at Manki in Uttara Kannada district. The project is planned under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model, with a concession period of 45 years.
Under the proposed structure, private participation will play a key role in financing, developing and operating the facility. The model is expected to bring private capital into the maritime infrastructure sector while allowing the project to be operated over the long concession period.
The Manki project is also expected to add capacity for cargo movement and support shipbuilding and other marine-related activities. Its location in Uttara Kannada gives the proposed development access to Karnataka’s Arabian Sea coastline and important maritime routes.
Beyond the port and shipyard itself, the development could create opportunities for logistics operators, engineering companies, maritime service providers and ancillary industries. Improved port infrastructure could also support industries in Karnataka and neighbouring regions by strengthening logistics connectivity.
The Karnataka government’s approval is an important step in moving the projects towards implementation. However, several stages remain before construction can begin. These include finalising concession arrangements, obtaining statutory and environmental clearances, achieving financial closure and establishing construction schedules.
The state’s maritime infrastructure plans also come as Karnataka looks to expand economic activity linked to its coastal geography. Port-led development can connect industrial activity with wider domestic and international cargo networks, while shipbuilding infrastructure can support related manufacturing and service businesses.
With a combined estimated investment of ₹7,247 crore, the approved projects add substantially to Karnataka’s infrastructure investment pipeline. The Manki port and shipyard development, in particular, will now move through the next stages of planning, clearances and project structuring before implementation.
