Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed infrastructure projects worth more than ₹100 crore for Perambur as part of a comprehensive urban development initiative aimed at improving civic infrastructure and public services. The projects are expected to enhance healthcare, education, sports facilities and recreational spaces while supporting the area’s long-term urban growth.
The proposed works will be funded through a combination of GCC allocations, the Chief Minister’s Special Funds, state government grants and financial assistance from foreign funding agencies. The initiative reflects the city’s continued focus on developing quality public infrastructure across Chennai.
One of the major proposals is the construction of a six-acre integrated sports complex near GNT Road. The facility will include a football ground, cricket practice nets, badminton courts and handball courts. Once completed, the complex is expected to promote sports development and provide modern training facilities for residents and young athletes in North Chennai.
To strengthen healthcare services, GCC has also proposed constructing a ground-plus-three-storey hospital with inpatient facilities at Sathyamoorthy Nagar. The new hospital is expected to reduce the burden on existing government hospitals in nearby Kolathur and Tondiarpet while improving access to quality healthcare for local residents. Before construction begins, the civic body has directed officials to obtain structural stability certification from experts at Anna University.
Education infrastructure also forms a key part of the proposal. Several ageing corporation school buildings constructed during the 1950s and 1960s will be redeveloped under the Chennai Schools initiative. The outdated structures will be replaced with modern educational facilities designed to provide a better learning environment for students.
Another notable proposal is the development of a food plaza along the 270-metre North Avenue Road in MKB Nagar. The underutilised stretch will be transformed into a vibrant food street similar to Anna Nagar, creating new opportunities for local businesses while improving the area’s social and commercial activity.
The proposed infrastructure package is expected to significantly improve the quality of public amenities in Perambur, support sustainable urban development and strengthen Chennai’s long-term infrastructure network.
