Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road to be upgraded into 10-lane smart corridor under Rs 450 crore project

Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR), one of the city’s busiest stretches connecting KR Puram and Central Silk Board, is set for a massive infrastructure upgrade. The Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Private Limited (BSMILE) has initiated a Rs 450 crore project to transform this critical corridor into a 10-lane smart roadway designed to reduce congestion and improve commuter convenience.

The project includes a six-lane main carriageway along with four dedicated service lanes, ensuring smoother vehicle movement and better traffic distribution. It will also feature wider footpaths, exclusive cycle tracks, and a Bus Priority Lane (BPL) to streamline public transport and eliminate bus shelter-related congestion on the main carriageway. These measures are aimed at addressing traffic volumes that currently exceed twice the road’s original design capacity.

According to officials, the project has been designed keeping in mind Bengaluru’s growing traffic density and the need for sustainable, multimodal connectivity. Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel time between KR Puram and Central Silk Board, one of the most congested corridors in the city.

The much-anticipated Metro Phase 2A, running parallel to the Outer Ring Road, is also expected to complement this initiative by further easing congestion. Metro authorities project nearly 1.5 lakh daily commuters by the end of 2026, once operations begin.

While the initial white-topping proposal was revised, key sections such as Marathahalli and Kadubeesanahalli will still undergo white-topping for added durability and smoother traffic flow. The project will be rolled out after final approvals and tendering are completed, marking a significant step in Bengaluru’s push toward modern and sustainable urban mobility.

With this transformation, the ORR is expected to emerge as a model corridor integrating smart infrastructure, non-motorized transport facilities, and efficient public mobility solutions, reflecting the city’s vision for a future-ready transport network.
