Tamil Nadu Budget 2026–27: ₹21,524 Crore Allocation to Strengthen Highways and Launch Safe Roads Mission

Tamil Nadu has significantly increased its focus on road infrastructure and public safety in the 2026–27 State Budget by allocating ₹21,524 crore to the Highways and Minor Ports Department. The investment reflects the state’s continued commitment to improving transport connectivity while introducing modern technologies and engineering practices aimed at reducing road accidents.

A key component of the allocation is the ₹9,300 crore earmarked under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP). The funding will be utilised for a wide range of projects, including four-laning of highways, construction of bypass roads, bridges, pedestrian overbridges, road category upgrades and improvements in riding quality. The programme also includes dedicated investments in road safety interventions across the state.

One of the Budget’s major announcements is the introduction of the Safe Roads Mission. The initiative adopts a comprehensive strategy by combining road engineering, regular maintenance, artificial intelligence-enabled traffic enforcement, dedicated highway patrols and strengthened trauma care facilities. The objective is to move beyond traditional enforcement methods and create a safer road network through better planning, monitoring and emergency response.

The government has also allocated ₹250 crore for performance-based road maintenance contracts. Under this model, contractors will be responsible for maintaining roads at predefined quality standards over a fixed period rather than carrying out one-time repairs. The approach is expected to improve road durability, accountability and long-term maintenance efficiency.

Technology will play an important role in the new road safety strategy. Artificial intelligence-based systems will be deployed to monitor speeding, traffic violations and other risky driving behaviour. Dedicated highway patrol teams and improved trauma care infrastructure are also expected to enhance emergency response times and reduce fatalities resulting from road accidents.

The Budget demonstrates Tamil Nadu’s intention to integrate infrastructure development with smart governance. As vehicle ownership and traffic volumes continue to rise, investments in safer roads, better maintenance practices and digital enforcement systems are expected to strengthen mobility, improve logistics efficiency and support the state’s long-term economic growth.

With substantial investments in both physical infrastructure and road safety initiatives, Tamil Nadu is positioning itself to build a more resilient and future-ready transport network while enhancing the safety of millions of daily road users.
