Trichy Airport Gets Green Signal for Domestic Cargo Operations, Boosting Trade Across Central Tamil Nadu

Trichy International Airport has received security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to commence domestic cargo operations, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s infrastructure development and addressing a long-standing demand from industries and the trade community across central Tamil Nadu.

The approval enables the airport to handle domestic freight for the first time, opening new opportunities for manufacturers, exporters, logistics companies and airline operators. Until now, Trichy Airport had primarily handled export cargo, forcing industries to depend on road transport or other airports for domestic freight movement.

The commencement of domestic cargo services is expected to improve supply chain efficiency for businesses operating in sectors such as textiles, engineering products, sports goods, spices and value-added food processing. Faster movement of goods within India is likely to reduce transportation time and logistics costs while enhancing market access for manufacturers across the region.

Airport officials said the development reflects continued efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and improve cargo infrastructure in line with the growing requirements of trade and industry. The approval is also expected to encourage airlines to explore additional domestic cargo services from Trichy.

Aviation experts believe the availability of domestic cargo handling could influence airlines to deploy narrow-body aircraft instead of smaller ATR aircraft on select domestic routes. Larger aircraft offer greater cargo carrying capacity, creating additional revenue opportunities for operators while improving freight availability for businesses.

Trichy Airport is currently connected to major domestic destinations including Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. With domestic cargo operations now approved, the airport is expected to play a larger role in supporting industrial growth and regional commerce.

Alongside the cargo expansion, the Airports Authority of India is also strengthening airside infrastructure at the airport. Construction is underway on a ₹9.2 crore stormwater drainage project, including reinforced cement concrete drains, box culverts and associated works between the parallel taxi track and the new aircraft apron. The project is aimed at improving water management and ensuring smoother airport operations during heavy rainfall.

The addition of domestic cargo services, combined with ongoing infrastructure upgrades, is expected to enhance Trichy Airport’s importance as a logistics gateway for central Tamil Nadu while supporting future growth in aviation, trade and manufacturing.
