NHAI Plans IIT-Led Independent Design Verification for Major Highway Bridges

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed a new quality assurance framework by empanelling Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other premier technical institutions to independently verify the design of major highway bridges across the country. The initiative is aimed at strengthening engineering governance, improving construction quality and ensuring the long-term safety of critical bridge infrastructure developed under the national highway programme.

According to NHAI, the proposed framework will introduce an independent proof-checking mechanism for major bridge structures designed with an expected service life of 100 years or more. The verification process will be carried out before construction begins, providing an additional layer of technical scrutiny for complex bridge projects.

Nearly 12 IITs, including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur, have expressed their willingness to participate in the initiative. Their expertise is expected to support NHAI in validating critical engineering parameters and ensuring that bridge designs meet the highest technical standards.

The scope of the independent review will extend beyond structural calculations. It will also include engineering drawings, construction methodologies, geotechnical investigations and hydraulic studies. By examining every critical engineering aspect before execution, NHAI aims to minimise design-related risks while improving the reliability and durability of bridge infrastructure.

The proposed proof-checking system will be implemented uniformly across projects executed under different delivery models, ensuring consistent engineering standards throughout the national highway network. The authority believes that a standardised review framework will enhance transparency, improve quality control and strengthen confidence in bridge construction practices.

The initiative also reflects NHAI’s growing emphasis on adopting global engineering best practices and collaborating with India’s leading academic institutions. Independent expert assessment is expected to improve project planning, reduce construction risks and ensure better lifecycle performance of major bridge assets.
