The VOC Chidambaranar Port Authority in Thoothukudi is preparing for one of its most ambitious infrastructure upgrades in recent years with a proposed investment of ₹5,720 crore aimed at transforming the port into a deeper and more competitive maritime gateway on India’s east coast.

The project will focus on deepening the harbour basin and approach channel, a move that is expected to significantly enhance the port’s ability to handle larger container ships, bulk carriers and tanker vessels. Port officials believe the upgrade will help VOC Port strengthen its position amid increasing competition from regional ports while supporting the growing demand for cargo movement across southern India.

At present, the port operates with a draught of 12.8 metres. Under the proposed expansion, the draught will be increased to 15.2 metres, allowing larger vessels to enter and operate efficiently. The project also includes modifications to the harbour entrance, construction of six new berths and modernization of existing berth infrastructure.

The deeper channel will enable the port to accommodate fully laden Panamax vessels carrying between 85,000 and 90,000 tonnes of dry bulk and general cargo. It will also allow the handling of large container ships with capacities of up to 14,000 TEUs, substantially increasing the port’s cargo handling potential.

The development comes at a crucial time as Tamil Nadu continues to emerge as a major manufacturing and export hub. Industries across sectors including automobiles, renewable energy, engineering goods, chemicals and containerized cargo are expected to benefit from improved maritime connectivity and larger vessel access.

Industry observers note that increasing vessel size has become a global trend as shipping companies seek greater operational efficiency and lower transportation costs. Ports capable of handling larger ships are therefore gaining a competitive advantage in attracting international shipping lines and cargo volumes.

For Thoothukudi, the project is expected to create long-term economic benefits by improving trade efficiency, supporting industrial growth and strengthening logistics infrastructure across southern India. Once completed, the expansion could position VOC Port as one of the country’s leading deep-water ports and a key gateway for global commerce.
