One of India’s most ambitious mountain infrastructure projects has reached a significant milestone with the breakthrough of the main tunnel of the Zojila Tunnel project. The achievement marks a crucial step towards establishing year-round road connectivity between Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, regions that have historically faced prolonged isolation during harsh winter months.
The breakthrough was achieved at the eastern portal near Minamarg in Kargil district, in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and senior officials from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The tunnel is being constructed between Baltal and Minamarg on National Highway-1 at an estimated cost of ₹6,800 crore.
Stretching 14 kilometres through the challenging Himalayan terrain, the tunnel is being built at elevations ranging from 2,900 metres to 3,310 metres above sea level. Once operational, it will provide uninterrupted connectivity across the Zojila Pass, a route frequently affected by heavy snowfall, avalanches and adverse weather conditions.
The project is expected to deliver significant economic and social benefits to the region. Travel time between Sonamarg and Minamarg is projected to come down from nearly two hours to just 30 minutes, improving access for residents, tourists and businesses. Faster movement of goods and services is also expected to support local economic activity and encourage tourism in Ladakh and surrounding areas.
Beyond civilian benefits, the tunnel carries immense strategic importance. The route serves as a critical supply corridor for defence forces operating in border regions. Reliable all-weather access will strengthen logistics support and improve mobility for military personnel and equipment.
The Zojila Tunnel is equipped with advanced safety features including modern ventilation systems, fire detection mechanisms, CCTV surveillance and emergency evacuation facilities. The broader project also includes bridges, culverts, avalanche protection structures, snow galleries and approach roads.
The breakthrough comes amid a larger infrastructure push across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, where several highway and tunnel projects are under development. Together, these investments are expected to improve regional connectivity, stimulate economic growth and strengthen India’s strategic presence in the Himalayan region.
