The Stone Quarry, Crusher and Lorry Owners’ Association has clarified that there has been no increase in the prices of key construction materials such as gravel, M-sand and P-sand across Tamil Nadu, countering recent allegations of price escalation and supply shortages.
According to K. Chinnasamy, State President of the association, construction materials are currently being sold at rates specified by the government. He stated that gravel is being supplied at ₹4,000 per load, M-sand at ₹5,000 per load and P-sand at ₹6,000 per load. The association maintained that there is no cause for concern for consumers, builders, contractors or stakeholders in the construction sector.
The clarification comes amid growing debate within the construction materials industry following claims made by the Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners’ Federation. The federation had urged the State government to take direct control of mineral resources and sell them to the public, alleging that several stone quarries and crusher units were collectively increasing prices after the temporary closure of 67 stone quarries in the State.
The federation also expressed concerns regarding the availability of quality M-sand and P-sand in the market and suggested that the government could generate additional revenue by procuring minerals directly from private quarries and distributing them through online sales depots across districts.
Responding to these allegations, the Stone Quarry Association described the claims as baseless and insisted that supplies remain stable. The association reiterated that construction materials continue to be available at approved rates and that there is no artificial scarcity in the market.
The issue has drawn attention from various stakeholders in the construction and infrastructure sectors, as sand and aggregates remain critical raw materials for residential, commercial and infrastructure projects across Tamil Nadu. Industry observers note that any disruption in supply or increase in prices could directly impact project costs and execution timelines.
With Tamil Nadu witnessing sustained growth in construction, real estate and infrastructure development, stakeholders are closely monitoring the availability and pricing of essential building materials in the State.
