Reliance Industries has renamed its ambitious multi modal logistics park project at Mappedu near Chennai as Chennai Global Logistics Park Ltd following the entry of Dubai based logistics giant DP World as a joint venture partner. The development marks a major milestone for one of Tamil Nadu’s largest logistics infrastructure projects that is expected to strengthen cargo movement and warehousing capacity in South India.
According to industry sources, DP World has acquired a 49 percent stake in the joint venture and has already taken around two lakh square feet of warehousing space within the logistics park. While both Reliance Industries and DP World have not officially commented on the development, the move is being viewed as a significant boost for Chennai’s logistics and supply chain ecosystem.
The project, located in Mappedu in Tiruvallur district, spans over 184 acres and was originally conceptualised nearly 14 years ago. However, the project faced several delays due to connectivity issues, land access challenges through nearby villages and infrastructure bottlenecks. In 2022, Reliance Industries secured the ₹1,424 crore project after winning the bid against the Adani Group. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on May 26, 2022.
Sources familiar with the development said the logistics park currently houses five warehouses, with three already occupied by clients. The appointment of Ajay Moghe, a long time DP World executive, as Chief Executive Officer of Chennai Global Logistics Park Ltd earlier this year further signals DP World’s deeper operational involvement in the project.
The logistics hub is strategically positioned to serve key industrial regions including Ranipet, Ambur, Tiruppur, Bengaluru and the Sriperumbudur Oragadam manufacturing belt. Industry experts believe the long term success of the project will depend heavily on dedicated rail connectivity between Mappedu and Chennai ports, which could significantly improve cargo evacuation efficiency and reduce logistics costs for industries across Tamil Nadu.
