Coimbatore Corporation has commenced construction of a dedicated paralympic sports complex at Jeeva Nagar near Kavundampalayam, marking a major step toward strengthening sports infrastructure for differently abled athletes in Tamil Nadu. The project is being developed on Corporation-owned land at an estimated cost of ₹9.9 crore.

Officials said the first phase of the project will cover nearly 42,765 square feet and include both ground and mezzanine floors with multiple indoor sports facilities. The upcoming complex is expected to become an important training and competition centre for para athletes in the region.

According to Corporation officials, preliminary site levelling works have already been completed and excavation activities are currently underway. During the excavation process, workers discovered layers of old waste buried nearly 10 feet deep, as the site had reportedly functioned as a dumping yard several years ago before becoming part of the Corporation limits. Authorities said the waste had to be carefully removed before construction activities could proceed further.

The first phase of the sports complex will feature facilities for sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, boccia, badminton and table tennis. The ground floor will include play areas, team locker rooms and supporting athlete facilities. Meanwhile, the mezzanine floor will house a multi-gym, yoga room, sitting volleyball courts and a first-aid medical room.

The Corporation is also planning parking infrastructure within the complex, including space for five buses, 25 cars and 74 two-wheelers. In the second phase, outdoor para athletics facilities for events such as javelin throw, discus throw, shot put and club throw are expected to be developed.

Officials stated that the entire project is targeted for completion within one year. The initiative is expected to improve accessibility to professional sports infrastructure for para athletes while encouraging greater participation in adaptive sports across Coimbatore and nearby districts.
