Tamil Nadu is reshaping its logistics strategy with a major shift in the development of the proposed Panjetty logistics park in North Chennai. Instead of functioning as a conventional storage-based facility, the project is now being re-envisioned as a direct cargo transfer hub designed to streamline freight movement between ports and industries.
Located near Ponneri, the Panjetty site sits within Chennai’s expanding northern corridor, an area that is rapidly emerging as a key logistics and industrial zone. Officials reviewing the City Logistics Plan for the Chennai Metropolitan Area have indicated that the hub will focus on enabling end-to-end cargo movement, reducing intermediate handling and improving overall efficiency.
This move reflects a broader transition in India’s logistics ecosystem, where traditional container freight stations are gradually giving way to faster and more integrated systems. Mechanisms such as Direct Port Delivery and Direct Port Entry are expected to play a central role in the new model, allowing cargo to move seamlessly between ports and manufacturing units with minimal delays.
The proposal also aligns with ongoing customs reforms, including pre-clearance systems and the Authorised Economic Operator programme, which aim to reduce cargo dwell time and enhance supply chain reliability. By integrating these initiatives, the Panjetty hub is expected to support faster turnaround times and lower logistics costs for businesses.
In parallel, authorities are evaluating the integration of a logistics facility proposed by the Central Warehousing Corporation along the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road. This phased approach is intended to create a larger, interconnected logistics ecosystem in the region.
Adding to its strategic significance, Panjetty is also being considered as a potential site for a new township centred around the logistics hub. This could drive real estate development and support workforce requirements in the area.
With improved rail connectivity also under consideration, including proximity to a proposed high-speed rail corridor, the Panjetty project is poised to become a critical node in Chennai’s logistics network, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading industrial and trade hub.
