The much-anticipated Chittoor–Thatchur six-lane greenfield expressway is set to open for traffic from May 1, marking a significant milestone for infrastructure development in Tamil Nadu. This project will make Tiruvallur district the first region in the state to benefit from an access-controlled expressway, setting a new benchmark for high-speed road connectivity.

Spanning a total length of 116.5 km, the expressway connects Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh to Thatchur near Chennai. Currently, around 96 km of the corridor has already been widened into a six-lane access-controlled road, while the remaining 20.5 km stretch is under construction and expected to be completed by December 2026. Despite the pending work, authorities have decided to open the completed sections to ease traffic flow and improve logistics efficiency.

This expressway is strategically important as it enables seamless freight movement from industrial hubs in Bengaluru and Andhra Pradesh directly to key ports such as Kamarajar Port and Kattupalli Port, without entering Chennai city. This is expected to significantly reduce congestion on existing arterial roads and improve turnaround time for cargo movement.

One of the key highlights of the project is its closed tolling system, where users will be charged based on the exact distance travelled. The highway is also equipped with modern infrastructure, including multiple entry and exit ramps, bridges, underpasses and advanced traffic management systems featuring surveillance cameras and real-time monitoring.

The expressway also connects with major infrastructure corridors such as the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway and the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road, further strengthening regional connectivity. With a design speed of 100 kmph, the corridor promises faster and safer travel for both passenger and commercial vehicles.

Overall, the Chittoor–Thatchur expressway is expected to play a crucial role in boosting industrial growth, enhancing logistics efficiency and driving real estate development across North Chennai and surrounding regions.
