Saint-Gobain Opens India’s First Near-Net Zero Gypsum Ceiling Tiles Plant in Visakhapatnam

India’s building materials sector is steadily moving towards more sustainable manufacturing practices as demand for environmentally responsible construction solutions increases. In a significant development, Saint-Gobain India Pvt. Ltd., through its Gyproc business, has commissioned India’s first near-net zero gypsum ceiling tiles manufacturing facility in Visakhapatnam.

The new plant represents an important step in the company’s long-term strategy to strengthen local manufacturing while reducing the environmental footprint of building materials production. Commissioned in December 2025, the facility will produce Gyprex PVC laminated gypsum ceiling tiles with an annual production capacity of around five million square metres.

Strategically located in Visakhapatnam, the facility is expected to enhance Saint-Gobain’s supply network across India, particularly catering to the fast-growing construction markets in southern and eastern regions. The proximity to key demand centres will enable faster delivery timelines, consistent product supply and improved support for large commercial, institutional and infrastructure projects where ceiling systems are widely used.

The defining feature of the plant is its near-net zero design, which significantly reduces carbon emissions through energy-efficient processes and modern manufacturing systems. The facility incorporates advanced dust collection systems and environmental controls aimed at improving air quality within the plant while lowering the overall environmental impact of operations.

Products manufactured at the facility meet internationally recognised standards such as BS EN 520 and BS EN 14190, ensuring durability, structural reliability and safety performance for gypsum-based ceiling systems used in commercial buildings.

Saint-Gobain has been present in India for nearly three decades and continues to expand its footprint across building materials, glass and construction solutions. The Visakhapatnam facility reflects the company’s broader commitment to sustainable manufacturing and aligns with its global goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As India’s infrastructure and real estate sectors continue to expand, demand for sustainable building materials is expected to grow rapidly. Investments in low-carbon manufacturing facilities such as this are likely to play a key role in shaping the future of the country’s construction ecosystem.
