TN Identifies Two Priority Road Corridors to Boost Parandur Airport Connectivity

Tamil Nadu has initiated concrete steps to strengthen surface connectivity to the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport, positioning the project as a long term catalyst for regional growth. Senior officials have identified two priority road corridors that will link the upcoming aviation hub with Chennai city and major industrial clusters, ensuring seamless passenger and cargo movement once the airport becomes operational.

The first proposal focuses on widening the existing Pallur Sogandi Road over a stretch of nearly 24 kilometres. The corridor is expected to be developed with an expanded right of way, along with a rerouted segment skirting the airport boundary to optimise traffic flow. Plans include a four lane carriageway supported by service roads to accommodate rising vehicular demand from both residential and logistics traffic.

In addition, a portion of State Highway 58 connecting key junctions near the expressway interchange is likely to be widened to manage projected traffic volumes. This upgrade is seen as critical in integrating the airport corridor with established highways and freight routes.

The second priority corridor proposes a new greenfield link from the Oragadam Cheyyar Industrial Corridor to Parandur. The 30 kilometre stretch is designed to provide direct access from south Chennai and the GST Road, strengthening industrial connectivity and reducing travel time for employees and cargo operators. Grade separated entry and exit ramps are being considered to enhance efficiency and safety.

Sources indicate that Detailed Project Reports for both corridors may be taken up shortly, with funding support from the industries department. Land acquisition norms are expected to vary across segments depending on urban density and alignment requirements.

Together, the proposed corridors are expected to unlock new investment opportunities, support industrial expansion and create a strong infrastructure backbone for the future airport, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading logistics and manufacturing destination.
