Tamil Nadu Clears Rs 204 Crore Steel Bridge to Link ECR and OMR

The Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority has formally cleared the long awaited steel bridge that will connect East Coast Road with Old Mahabalipuram Road. Valued at approximately Rs 204 crore, the project marks a significant step in improving mobility across one of Chennai’s most travelled stretches. Officials familiar with the plan said the approval follows a detailed assessment of environmental requirements, structural design and long term coastal impact.

The proposed bridge will extend nearly 335 metres and will feature a six lane facility designed to support the growing movement of commuters between the two corridors. The stretch is known for heavy traffic throughout the day and the new link is expected to ease this pressure by offering a more direct and faster route. Authorities have insisted on strong environmental safeguards that include corrosion resistant construction methods and protection systems suitable for coastal weather conditions.

The steel bridge is part of a broader effort to improve road connectivity for Chennai’s expanding IT belt which depends heavily on seamless access between ECR and OMR. The new structure is expected to enhance travel for thousands of daily commuters including office goers, service employees and logistics operations that support the technology hubs located along the corridor.

Officials from the coastal authority added that the approval was granted after ensuring that the bridge design adheres to all national coastal regulation frameworks. The project will also include soil protection work and measures to ensure that tidal patterns and nearby coastal activity remain unaffected. These provisions were considered essential because the location falls within a highly sensitive marine zone where long term sustainability must be ensured.

Once work begins, the bridge is expected to accelerate development around both corridors while also strengthening the city’s inland and coastal road network. With this clearance, the project now moves to its next phase of implementation which will involve technical planning, contractor mobilisation and final regulatory coordination.
