Chennai Metro and HUDCO Partner to Revamp Adyar’s Broken Bridge into a Vibrant Tourism and Leisure Hub

In a major move to reimagine Chennai’s urban landscape, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has joined hands with the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) to transform underutilised city spaces into lively public destinations. The collaboration focuses on preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for beautification and place-making projects across Chennai, with the historic Broken Bridge area in Adyar being the highlight.

Located along the scenic Adyar estuary, the Broken Bridge holds cultural and historic significance. Now, it is set for a complete transformation into a vibrant leisure and tourism hub. The redevelopment plan covers about 14,120 square metres and includes plans for a waterfront promenade, beachfront cafés, adventure zones, walking and cycling loops, and wellness spaces designed to attract residents and tourists alike.

The initiative does not stop at Adyar. CMRL and HUDCO also aim to rejuvenate underused spaces beneath the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) near Indira Nagar Railway Station and below the Velachery Rail Over Bridge. Covering more than 15,000 square metres in total, these spaces will be redesigned into multifunctional civic areas with retail outlets, children’s play zones, and dynamic lighting to ensure safety and engagement.

The DPR contract, valued at Rs 53 lakh, was signed in the presence of CMRL Managing Director MA Siddique. It was formalised by CMRL Projects Director T Archunan and HUDCO Executive Director V T Subramanian. Officials said the initiative will help enhance Chennai’s urban appeal while boosting tourism and community interaction.

According to CMRL, the project aims to blend sustainability with accessibility. By turning disused transit-adjacent zones into active social spaces, the plan is expected to stimulate local economic activity and support small businesses. The redevelopment also aligns with the city’s broader efforts to promote wellness and environmental consciousness through smart urban design.

Once completed, the rejuvenated Broken Bridge is expected to become a new cultural and recreational landmark, reflecting Chennai’s coastal identity and commitment to sustainable city living.
