Suburban commuters in Chennai are poised to gain through infrastructural upgrades of mammoth proportions, with two new bus terminuses coming up at Avadi and Chengalpattu. The schemes are meant to develop local and intercity travel and ensure a lesser load on transport hubs in the city core.

On Wednesday, CMDA Minister P K Sekarbabu laid the foundation for the ₹36 crore redevelopment of the Avadi bus terminus. Spanning an area of 1.9 acres with a built-up area of 64,700 sq ft, the new facility will comprise a three-storey terminal building housing waiting halls, rest areas for crew, nine commercial shops, a food court, purified drinking water, and separate toilets for men and women.

With basic facilities for commuters, the Avadi terminus will have parking for 10 cars and 435 two-wheelers; 10 bus bays for MTC and 12 for long-distance services. This project is expected to enhance the connectivity of public transport for the residents in the western suburbs of Chennai, being announced in the Tamil Nadu budget for 2024-25.

Meanwhile, work is progressing on the new ₹130 crore satellite bus terminus in Chengalpattu. Coming up on a 10-acre site, the facility is expected to be completed by December and will serve as a major node for long-distance travel from Chengalpattu, reducing the need to travel to Kilambakkam.

“Once operational, buses will connect Chengalpattu directly to Villupuram, Trichy, Bengaluru, and Hosur, benefiting over 10 lakh people and reducing congestion on GST Road,” Sekarbabu said.

The Chengalpattu terminus will operate 600+ buses daily via 57 bays and is designed to handle 10,000 passengers on weekdays and up to 30,000 during festivals. It will offer toilets, drinking water, a health centre, lactation rooms, low-cost eateries, and 37 rental shops. A 100-metre space has been reserved for future expansion. MTC bays and a low-cost canteen run by self-help groups are also planned.

Sekarbabu added that work on the long-delayed Mamallapuram bus terminus has resumed following ASI clearance, with completion targeted for January 2026.
