Buoyed by the success of its Kathipara Urban Square project, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to bring similar vibrant public spaces to Adyar and Velachery. The new developments aim to transform neglected areas into bustling hubs of recreation and commerce.
CMRL has identified three key locations for redevelopment:
- Indira Nagar MRTS Station,
- The area along the Broken Bridge, and
- Near Velachery MRTS Station.
These areas are being transformed into people-friendly places with scenic seafront promenade walkways, landscaped landscapes, seating space, shops, and eco-sensitive public facilities. The plan is to follow the same model used to transform the area under the Kathipara flyover into a trendy city square with food stalls, children’s play parks, and other spaces that attract huge weekend visitations.
“These upcoming urban squares are designed not just as transit points, but as vibrant community spaces that can boost local tourism and provide citizens with accessible, eco-friendly public zones,” a CMRL official said.
The project is currently in its conceptual phase. CMRL is working with urban design consultants to finalize plans, after which tenders will be floated. Authorities highlight that there is a thrust on community interactions, sustainability, and the activation of potential within underutilized spaces in Chennai.
Kathipara Urban Square has already emerged as an urban placemaking success story, and CMRL’s recent initiative indicates ongoing efforts to turn city infrastructure into people-friendly places.
With plans in motion and public interest running high, Chennai could soon see more such inclusive and dynamic public spaces shaping its urban landscape.
