Amaravati, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, is undergoing a total transformation of its infrastructure as part of the development process to transform the region into a smart, modern, and sustainable urban hub. The state government is undertaking 38 development packages with a focus on flood control, urban infrastructure, and parks, of which 14 roadwork packages have been tendered and are in progress.

Principal components of these highway upgrades are increasing roads to six lanes and the inclusion of “Smart Trunk Infrastructure.” This is a sophisticated infrastructure that will encompass special cycling and walking paths, avenue plantations, water and irrigation pipes, underground sewerage, utility conduits, electric networks, ICT networks, recycled water pipes, and contemporary street furniture.

One of the prominent works in progress is Package-IV, for Rs 522.39 crore. Besides, enormous investments are being made in significant roads such as N-15, E-6, and N-12 with an investment of more than Rs 4,000 crore.

The process of development also emphasizes environmental sustainability. Around Rs 175 crore will be spent on avenue plantations along 35 main roads, and Rs 25 crore will be spent on developing public parks across the city.

P. Narayana, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, has appointed ambitious timelines for the projects. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) plans to complete the trunk road infrastructure within 1.5 years and the Land Pooling Scheme (LPS) layout infrastructure in 2.5 years, which will be a huge jump towards transforming Amaravati as a new-age capital.
