Chennai Metro’s Airport-Kilambakkam Extension Moves Forward with Revised DPR

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has now submitted a modified Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the long-awaited Airport-Kilambakkam Metro extension. The revised plan, as per orders from the government, connects the metro and road infrastructure for improved connectivity to the city.

The corridor, 15.46 km long and estimated to cost ₹9,335 crores, will have 13 elevated stations, touching important locations like Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur and Vandalur. The metro operates on level-2 while a road on level-1 would allow traffic flow without any interruption.

A key component of this plan is the incorporation of an elevated road that will directly enter the Kilambakkam Bus Terminal and facilitate seamless transit for commuters. Intermediate ramps will also connect the ORR in Tambaram directly to the ORR in the vicinity to improve access to other transport corridors. The DPR also has plans for an extension to Chengalpattu at a later stage.

CMRL Managing Director M.A. Siddique in Chennai on Friday formally submitted the revised DPR to Additional Chief Secretary (Special Initiatives) K. Gopal at the Secretariat. This key milestone in the project is expected to usher in a set of solutions to urban mobility and congestion problems in South Chennai.
