The Tamil Nadu State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority has formally accorded environmental clearance for the highly awaited Kalaignar International Convention Centre. The modern building located on the East Coast Road in Muttukadu, Chennai, is expected to become an internationally important venue for events.

After getting all clearances from the Coastal Zone Management Authority, construction work of the center would begin. It would be valued at approximately ₹525 crores, spread over 5 lakh square feet. The project is to be completed before the close of 2025 or January 2026.

The Kalaignar Centre has been designed as a modern convention and exhibition hub. It will have all sorts of amenities, from a 5,000-seat conference hall at an estimated cost of ₹102 crore to a 10,000-capacity exhibition hall and multiple star-rated hotels, restaurants, media halls, and expansive green parks. The complex will also include multi-level parking to cater to large crowds expected at various global events.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said that this development would allow the convention center to bring Chennai to a higher level of prime destination for international trade fairs, conferences, and film festivals. The setting up of this high-class infrastructure will also boost the appeal of the city as a global event hub further and enhance the economy by adding considerable growth to tourism and business in the region.
