Vedanta Iron and Steel Limited (VISL) has reported its highest-ever quarterly pig iron production, highlighting the company’s continued operational strength and expanding role in India’s steel manufacturing sector. During the April to June quarter of FY27, VISL produced 291,000 tonnes of pig iron, registering an 8 percent year-on-year increase from 269,000 tonnes recorded during the same period last year. Production also improved 5 percent compared to the previous quarter, reflecting sustained momentum across its integrated mining and steel operations.

The company attributed the record performance to increased mining activity and improved production efficiency, particularly at its Goa operations. Iron ore production from Goa surged 166 percent year-on-year to six lakh dry metric tonnes, while the Goa plant achieved its highest-ever quarterly hot metal production of 238,000 tonnes. The improved output was supported by higher mining volumes and enhanced processing capabilities.

Odisha also played a major role in the company’s growth during the quarter. Saleable iron ore production from the state increased 59 percent year-on-year to 12 lakh dry metric tonnes, contributing nearly half of VISL’s total saleable iron ore production of 26 lakh dry metric tonnes. The company stated that continuous operational improvements and better resource management helped drive higher production without major capacity expansion.

While Karnataka recorded lower production due to planned mine development activities, VISL said the temporary decline is expected to support higher output in the coming quarters. The company also highlighted the future commissioning of a beneficiation plant, which will process additional banded hematite quartzite resources and strengthen production from the region.

Overall hot metal production reached 601,000 tonnes during the quarter, while saleable steel production increased 4 percent to 582,000 tonnes. Billet production witnessed significant growth, more than tripling compared to the previous year.

The strong quarterly performance reinforces Vedanta Iron and Steel’s focus on operational excellence, mining efficiency and integrated steel manufacturing. As India continues to expand infrastructure, manufacturing and industrial investments, sustained growth in domestic steel production will remain critical to meeting rising demand. VISL’s record production positions the company to support the country’s long-term steel sector growth while strengthening its presence across the mining and metals value chain.
