UltraTech becomes world’s largest cement company by sales volume, excluding China

UltraTech Cement Limited, the flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, has achieved a historic feat by becoming the world’s largest cement producer by sales volume, excluding China. The company has also secured the position of being the second-largest globally by installed capacity. This milestone marks a new chapter in UltraTech’s journey of continuous expansion, operational excellence, and sustainable growth.

For the financial year 2024–25 (FY25), UltraTech reported grey cement sales of 135.83 million tonnes (MnT), supported by a total installed capacity of 192.26 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The company has announced an additional investment of ₹10,255 crore to expand its cement production capacity by 22.8 MTPA, which also includes the capacity of its subsidiary, India Cements Limited. The new capacities are planned to be commissioned in phases starting FY28, taking UltraTech’s total cement capacity to 240.76 MTPA.

This large-scale expansion highlights UltraTech’s strategic focus on sustainable, long-term growth to meet India’s rapidly rising demand for infrastructure and housing. The company’s leadership in the global cement industry is built on strong operational efficiency, cutting-edge technology, and its commitment to eco-friendly practices.

UltraTech’s journey began in the mid-1980s with the commissioning of its first cement plant under the Aditya Birla Group. A significant turning point came in 1998 with the merger of Grasim Industries and Indian Rayon’s cement businesses, followed by the acquisition of L&T Cement in 2004, which led to the creation of the UltraTech brand.

By 2010, all cement operations of the Aditya Birla Group were consolidated under UltraTech, making it India’s largest cement producer. The company reached a capacity of 100 MTPA in 2019 and scaled it up to 192.26 MTPA by 2024 — adding 50 MTPA in less than five years. With expansion plans in progress, UltraTech is poised to cross the 200 MTPA mark by FY26, reaffirming its status as a global cement powerhouse.
