Tiruchirappalli International Airport Begins Domestic Air Cargo Operations

Tiruchirappalli International Airport has started domestic air cargo operations, adding a new logistics link for businesses across central Tamil Nadu. The service began on August 25, with the airport handling around 2.46 tonnes of cargo on its first day.

The first domestic consignment weighed approximately 1.19 tonnes and was transported to Hyderabad on an IndiGo passenger flight. The launch followed approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), allowing the airport to handle domestic cargo through its existing integrated passenger terminal.

Until now, Tiruchirappalli airport’s cargo activity was largely centred on international shipments. The introduction of domestic cargo services gives local manufacturers, traders and other businesses another option for moving goods to markets elsewhere in India, reducing their dependence on road freight for time-sensitive consignments.

The new service could be particularly useful for industries in and around Tiruchirappalli, including textiles, engineering products, machinery, components, agricultural produce and value-added food products. Faster air connectivity can be important for businesses dealing with goods that need to reach customers quickly.

Initially, cargo will be carried using the available belly capacity of passenger flights operating from the airport. Tiruchirappalli has domestic connections to major cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad, allowing shipments to reach wider markets through these aviation hubs.

The move also comes at a time when the airport is seeing growth in both passenger and cargo activity. Its international cargo operations have supported the movement of agricultural and manufactured products, while the addition of domestic freight could broaden the range of goods handled at the facility.

For central Tamil Nadu, the development has significance beyond the airport itself. Tiruchirappalli sits within an important industrial and commercial catchment, and improved air freight connectivity could help local businesses access major consumption and manufacturing centres more efficiently.

As domestic cargo volumes build up, airlines, freight operators, exporters and other logistics stakeholders are expected to play a role in expanding the service. Higher volumes could eventually create demand for additional cargo handling and storage infrastructure.

The immediate focus will be on increasing utilisation, attracting more shippers and building cargo volumes. If the service gains traction, Tiruchirappalli International Airport could strengthen its position as a regional aviation and logistics hub for central Tamil Nadu.
