Tamil Nadu has taken a significant step towards strengthening India’s growing space sector by signing an agreement with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to establish a Common Technical Facility (CTF) near the proposed Kulasekarapattinam Spaceport in Thoothukudi district.
The agreement was signed during IN-SPACe’s annual industry conclave held in Ahmedabad and is expected to create a robust ecosystem for space systems manufacturing in southern India. The facility will be developed at Allikulam, located close to the upcoming spaceport site, and is expected to serve as a shared testing and integration hub for private companies, start-ups, and emerging space technology firms.
Under the agreement, IN-SPACe will provide advanced testing and validation equipment worth up to ₹100 crore. The Tamil Nadu government will contribute land and support the development of buildings, utilities, and associated infrastructure required for the facility.
The Common Technical Facility will offer critical testing capabilities, including vibration testing, shock testing, thermal vacuum testing, electromagnetic compatibility assessments, pressure simulations, flow simulations, and assembly and integration services. These facilities are essential for qualifying components and systems intended for space applications.
Industry experts believe the new centre will significantly reduce the time and investment required for private companies to develop and certify space-grade hardware. The facility is expected to address one of the key challenges faced by India’s rapidly expanding private space sector by providing access to world-class infrastructure under a shared model.
The project is also expected to support the development of a larger aerospace and space manufacturing cluster around the proposed Kulasekarapattinam Spaceport. By combining launch infrastructure with manufacturing and testing capabilities, Tamil Nadu aims to position itself as a leading destination for space technology investments.
Officials stated that the initiative aligns with India’s broader objective of increasing private sector participation in the space industry while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities. The facility is expected to attract new investments, create high-skilled employment opportunities, and support the growth of indigenous space technology companies.
With the space economy projected to witness strong growth in the coming years, the Tamil Nadu-IN-SPACe partnership represents a major milestone in building a globally competitive space manufacturing ecosystem in India.
