The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin on Wednesday inaugurated 1,046 newly constructed flats built at the behest of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB). Targeting the first batch of about 1,000 housing units for the inhabitants of the city, it aims to offer residents improved living conditions and infrastructure.

The Chief Minister also launched remote construction of 464 government quarters, at a cost of ₹116.55 crore, from the Secretariat. These quarters will provide residence for the officials and to ensure decent housing for government officials.

Housing and Urban Development Minister S. Muthusamy, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam and other senior officials were present at the event.

In addition to issuing orders on housing developments, the Chief Minister also allocated funds to the HR&CE department for the maintenance of temples maintained by it. Across Kanyakumari, Pudukkottai and Thanjavur districts, a total grant of ₹27 crore was sanctioned to temples. The cheques were presented by State HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekar Babu to the management boards of the respective temples.

The financial aid is likely to benefit 490 temples in Kanyakumari district, 225 temples under the management of the Pudukkottai Devasthanam Board and 88 temples under the Thanjavur Devasthanam Board. To preserve these religious sites, the grant will be used for temple maintenance, renovation, and related activities.

This initiative highlights the state government’s efforts towards urbanization as well as for preserving heritage so that both housing infrastructure and religious institutions get equal attention.
