L&T Wins Major Steel EPC Orders, Strengthening India’s Capacity Expansion Drive

India’s steel expansion story has gained renewed momentum with Larsen & Toubro securing significant domestic orders for its Minerals & Metals business. The latest wins, including large engineering, procurement and construction contracts from Steel Authority of India Ltd, underline the growing pace of capacity creation and modernisation across the country’s major steel plants.

The association between L&T and SAIL spans several decades and has played a defining role in shaping India’s metallurgical infrastructure. Built on consistent execution and technical depth, this partnership has supported capacity expansion, efficiency improvements and sustainable practices at some of the nation’s most critical steel facilities. The latest set of orders continues this legacy, reinforcing L&T’s position as a trusted EPC partner in the metals sector.

A key highlight is SAIL’s ambitious expansion at the IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur, West Bengal. Under its modernisation programme, SAIL aims to raise crude steel capacity from 2.5 million tonnes per annum to 6.5 million tonnes per annum. As part of this upgrade, L&T has been entrusted with the complete EPC scope for core process units, including the Coke Oven Battery, By-Product Plant, Basic Oxygen Furnace and specialised material handling systems. These facilities form the backbone of the expanded steel complex and are critical to improving operational efficiency and output.

Simultaneously, L&T has secured an order at SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand, where it will establish Sinter Plant Number Two as part of a major upstream expansion. This project is expected to strengthen raw material processing and enhance overall plant productivity.

Beyond integrated steel plants, L&T’s Minerals & Metals business has also won multiple orders for specialised material handling equipment such as stacker reclaimers and wagon tipplers from clients across India. These orders highlight the company’s end-to-end execution capability across the metals value chain.

Industry experts see these projects as vital to India’s steel self-reliance agenda. By upgrading capacity and deploying modern, efficient technologies, domestic steelmakers are better positioned to meet rising demand from infrastructure, construction and manufacturing sectors. For L&T, the new wins reaffirm its engineering strength, project management expertise and long-standing contribution to India’s industrial growth.
