The Karnataka cabinet has approved an allocation of ₹2,296 crore to strengthen and modernize Bengaluru’s deteriorating infrastructure. The decision comes in response to growing public criticism over pothole-ridden roads, poor drainage systems, and worsening traffic congestion across the city.
The cabinet’s move is seen as a significant step toward restoring “Brand Bengaluru,” with a focus on enhancing urban mobility and livability. The project is also being viewed through a political lens, as the government gears up for the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) polls expected in early 2026.
According to the cabinet decision, ₹1,241.57 crore will be utilized under the Special Infrastructure Project (SIP) for the asphalting and improvement of arterial, sub-arterial, and major roads across all 28 Assembly constituencies in the city. These works aim to ensure smoother traffic flow, minimize travel time, and provide a durable road network suitable for the city’s growing population and industrial needs.
An additional ₹1,055 crore has been sanctioned under the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development Programme (CMIDP). This fund will be used to upgrade civic amenities such as stormwater drains, footpaths, government offices, and community halls in each Assembly constituency.
The government’s renewed focus on Bengaluru’s infrastructure comes after sustained criticism from citizens, industry leaders, and civic groups. Recently, Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw expressed concern over the city’s poor infrastructure, echoing a Chinese investor’s remarks about Bengaluru’s roads and garbage issues. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also heads the Bengaluru Development portfolio, held consultations with Shaw and former Infosys CFO T.V. Mohandas Pai, assuring swift action to address long-standing civic problems.
Officials said that the development push aims to ease traffic congestion, attract new investments, and create more employment opportunities. The comprehensive upgrade is expected to significantly improve urban resilience, help existing businesses operate efficiently, and reinforce Bengaluru’s image as India’s technology and innovation hub.
