The Karnataka government has announced an ambitious investment of more than ₹1.5 lakh crore to transform Bengaluru’s transport infrastructure, marking one of the largest mobility development programmes undertaken for the city. The announcement was made by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar during Katalyst Connect, an event organised by the Karnataka IT-BT Department and the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM).

The large-scale infrastructure programme is aimed at reducing traffic congestion, improving connectivity and supporting Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding economy, which continues to attract global technology companies and Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

A key component of the investment plan is the construction of an additional 40 km of tunnel roads, including the proposed Hebbal Tunnel Road, which is expected to ease congestion in one of the city’s busiest traffic corridors. The government also plans to develop more than 44 km of double-decker roadways to optimise the use of urban space while improving vehicle movement.

To further strengthen road connectivity, Karnataka will implement a 133-km flyover network across Bengaluru. These projects are expected to reduce travel time, improve traffic flow and provide seamless connectivity across major commercial and residential zones.

The government is also moving ahead with the 123-km Bangalore Business Corridor, a strategic infrastructure project designed to improve connectivity around the city and support industrial and logistics growth. An allocation of ₹26,000 crore has already been earmarked for the first phase of the corridor.

Public transportation remains another major focus of the state’s mobility strategy. Chief Minister Shivakumar announced that Bengaluru’s Metro rail network is targeted to expand to nearly 500 km, significantly enhancing last-mile connectivity and providing commuters with a faster and more sustainable transport option.

Addressing representatives from more than 150 Global Capability Centres, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure despite ongoing challenges. Improved transport connectivity is expected to strengthen Bengaluru’s position as India’s leading technology and innovation hub while supporting future economic growth, investment and employment generation.
