On 27th February 2025, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport broke records to raise the bar in cargo handling, becoming the owner of the biggest greenfield domestic cargo terminal (DCT) in the country. Developed and operated by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) in partnership with Menzies Aviation, the facility is expected to enhance domestic cargo operations significantly.

In seven acres, the terminal is engineered to work with a peak capacity of 3.6 lakh tonnes per year, with a future expansion including 4 lakh tonnes. Outfitted with 42 truck docks, more than 400 cargo bins and high-tech conveyor systems with some integrated X-ray machines, the facility is designed for throughput. The warehouse is also equipped with 30 unit load device (ULD) build-up and breakdown stations as well as 40 handheld terminals and self-service kiosks for cargo agents.

One of the highlights of the terminal is the fact that it is technology-driven. Which ensures smoother data exchange with airline networks using features like real-time shipment tracking, data analytics tools, and barcode and QR code-based communication systems. This consolidation is anticipated to shorten turnaround times while enhancing overall operational productivity.

Bengaluru Airport has always played a key role in exporting perishables like mangoes and coriander. This new terminal will give it a bigger role in handling specialized shipments, from valuables and live animals to dangerous goods and even radioactive materials.

In addition to its operational efficiency, the terminal has a strong focus on sustainability. It complies with IGBC standards and has green features like skylights, efficient ventilation systems, conservation of water, energy-efficient infrastructure, etc.

The launch reinforces Bengaluru’s role as a vital logistics hub that meets the growing needs of India’s air cargo sector while pioneering greater efficiency and sustainability.
