CMRL-State highway to build Double-Decker Flyover in Coimbatore The 3-kilometer section from Goldwins to Le Méridien Hotel will have operations of the metro rail on the upper deck, and road traffic on the lower deck.

The project, revealed by G. Manuneethi, divisional engineer (highways – road safety), was discussed during a session titled “Coimbatore City Flyovers – Latest Update” organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore.

Cost-Effective Solution Without Additional Land Acquisition

According to Manuneethi, the joint effort between CMRL and state highways will significantly cut costs by eliminating the need for separate land acquisition for the metro project along this stretch.

The proposal aligns with the state government’s broader infrastructure development plans. In November 2024, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the extension of an elevated corridor from Goldwins to Neelambur, covering 5 kilometers with a budget of ₹600 crore. Following the announcement, the state highways department swiftly conducted land surveys and soil tests, leading to the preparation of a detailed project report.

Metro Corridor and Airport Expansion Plans

In parallel, CMRL is progressing with its Corridor-I project, which spans 20.4 kilometers from the Ukkadam bus stand to the Neelambur integrated station, passing through Coimbatore International Airport. For this, CMRL will acquire land from Anna Statue to Goldwins but aims to collaborate with state highways for the Goldwins to Le Méridien segment to avoid further acquisitions.

Meanwhile, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has also announced plans for a new terminal building on the L&T Bypass Road. For better traffic, a 100-feet-wide road will be constructed between Le Méridien Hotel and the airport terminal. CMRL also intends to erect pillars for metro construction along this route.

With these developments, Coimbatore is poised for a significant transformation in its urban infrastructure, promising improved connectivity and reduced traffic congestion.
