CMRL Accelerates Phase II Works, Vadapalani–Poonamallee Metro Trial Runs Targeted Soon

Chennai Metro Rail is pushing ahead at full pace to complete a key six-kilometre stretch of its Phase II network, linking Vadapalani with the Poonamallee depot, as the city moves closer to operating its first double-decker metro corridor. With trial runs targeted for mid-January, the project has entered a decisive phase marked by round-the-clock construction and unprecedented deployment of manpower and machinery.

Officials said nearly 4,000 workers are currently engaged across the corridor, underlining the urgency attached to commissioning the stretch. Around 3,000 workers are focused on viaduct and deck slab construction, while 600 are handling track-laying activities. Another 400 personnel are deployed for traction, signalling and associated systems. To accelerate progress, 57 cranes have been pressed into service, far exceeding the usual deployment for metro projects in the city.

The Vadapalani–Poonamallee section is a crucial part of Phase II and will be the first operational segment of Chennai’s ambitious double-decker metro system. Engineers say a significant portion of the work has been completed over the past four months, despite the technical complexity involved. The double-decker configuration requires highly precise design and execution, as two heavy transport systems must operate safely on a single structure under tight geometric constraints.

Track-laying on the elevated structure is progressing at an average pace of nearly 300 metres a day. Dedicated teams are working exclusively on this stretch, with manpower diverted from other Phase II corridors to ensure deadlines are met. Daily reviews of work planning and task allocation are being conducted to avoid bottlenecks and maintain momentum.

Initially, there will be no intermediate stations between Vadapalani and Porur. Stations along the corridor are expected to be ready by June, after which passenger access will expand further. Until then, commuters boarding at Vadapalani will have their first stop at Porur. Visible progress at Vadapalani station is expected within days, offering commuters a glimpse of the transformation underway.

Chennai Metro had originally planned to open the first Phase II section in December, but delays in receiving speed certification led to a revised timeline. With an interim clearance now in place and works nearing completion, officials remain confident of commencing trial runs shortly, setting the stage for commercial operations by the end of January or early February. Once operational, the corridor is expected to significantly improve east-west connectivity and ease congestion in key parts of the city.
