Chennai is set to take a major leap in its sporting journey with the Tamil Nadu government announcing the development of a world-class sports city along the Old Mahabalipuram Road. Spread across 42 acres and developed at an estimated cost of Rs 261 crore, the ambitious project is designed to position Chennai firmly on the global sports map.

The project will be spearheaded by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu in coordination with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. Together, the agencies aim to create a comprehensive sports ecosystem that caters to athletes, professionals, and the public, while meeting international standards across disciplines.

According to officials, the proposed sports city will house a large multi-purpose stadium and a FIFA-standard football field, offering world-class infrastructure for competitive events and professional training. Dedicated facilities for cycling, swimming, shooting, and archery are also planned, ensuring athletes across diverse sports have access to specialised training environments.

Water sports will be a key highlight of the project, with infrastructure proposed for rowing and kayaking. In addition to sports-specific facilities, the complex will include athlete accommodation, commercial spaces, landscaped parks, jogging tracks, and well-planned public zones that encourage fitness and community engagement.

Sustainability has been built into the project’s design. A rainwater conservation system and green spaces are planned to ensure efficient resource management and environmental responsibility, aligning with the state’s broader urban development goals.

Strategically located near the Sathyabama Institute along OMR, the sports city is expected to benefit from excellent connectivity and proximity to educational and residential hubs. The location also strengthens OMR’s growing reputation as a corridor for large-scale infrastructure and urban development in Chennai.

Chief Minister M K Stalin first announced the project in 2022, outlining a long-term vision to elevate Tamil Nadu’s presence in the international sports arena. The facility is targeted for completion by 2027 and is expected to play a crucial role in nurturing sporting talent while attracting national and international events.

With this project, Chennai moves a step closer to becoming a global sports destination, combining world-class infrastructure, athlete-centric planning, and sustainable urban development.
