Chennai’s ₹2,100-Crore Thiruvanmiyur-Uthandi Elevated Corridor Faces Uncertainty

Chennai’s proposed ₹2,100-crore elevated corridor between Thiruvanmiyur and Uthandi has run into fresh uncertainty after the project was omitted from Tamil Nadu’s latest policy note.

The four-lane elevated road, planned over approximately 13.5 kilometres along the East Coast Road (ECR), was conceived as a major intervention to ease congestion on one of south Chennai’s increasingly busy transport corridors.

The project was formally launched in February this year, with the foundation stone laid for the Thiruvanmiyur-Uthandi elevated road. The proposed corridor was expected to provide an elevated route for through traffic, allowing vehicles to bypass several road-level intersections and reduce delays along the existing ECR.

The proposed alignment runs through a rapidly developing part of southern Chennai, where residential communities, commercial establishments, educational institutions and other developments have expanded significantly in recent years.

Its omission from the latest policy note is significant because such government documents generally outline key infrastructure priorities and projects being pursued. However, the omission does not by itself confirm that the elevated corridor has been permanently cancelled.

The project had already been facing questions over its implementation, including concerns surrounding the tendering process and estimated project cost. The latest policy position adds another layer of uncertainty to a project that was expected to address growing traffic pressure along the ECR.

The ₹2,100-crore investment would have represented a substantial allocation towards Chennai’s road infrastructure. For commuters and businesses operating along the ECR, the elevated corridor was positioned as a long-term solution to improve traffic movement between Thiruvanmiyur and Uthandi.

The project’s status is now likely to depend on the Tamil Nadu government’s next decision regarding its scope, cost, tendering and implementation strategy. Alternative measures to manage traffic along the ECR could also come into focus if the elevated corridor remains suspended.

For now, the project’s exclusion from the latest policy note means its implementation status remains unclear. Further government announcements will be important in determining whether the proposed corridor is revived in its existing form, redesigned or replaced with another solution for improving connectivity along Chennai’s southern coastal stretch.
