Final Speed Trial of Chennai Metro Corridor 4 Stretch Expected in February

Chennai Metro Rail Limited is moving closer to launching passenger services on a key stretch of Corridor 4 Phase II, as the final speed trial between Vadapalani and Poonthamalli Bypass is expected in the third week of February. The development marks a significant milestone for the 14.64 kilometre priority corridor that will strengthen connectivity across the western suburbs of Chennai.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety has completed statutory inspections covering the elevated section between Iyyapanthangal and Vadapalani. The inspection exercise, carried out over two days, covered 11 stations including major transit points such as Porur Junction and Iyyapanthangal. Officials reviewed civil structures, track alignment, signalling systems and electrical infrastructure as part of the mandatory safety clearance process.

According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited, the final speed trial will be conducted after observations from the inspection are addressed. Once regulatory approval is granted, the corridor will be opened for commercial operations, improving last mile connectivity and easing traffic congestion along the busy arterial routes linking central and western Chennai.

The authority has chosen to prioritise extending services up to Vadapalani instead of commissioning the stretch only till Porur Junction. This decision was taken to ensure seamless integration with the operational Phase I network, which is expected to enhance ridership and provide direct interchange options for commuters.

The Vadapalani to Poonthamalli Bypass section forms part of Chennai Metro Phase II, one of the largest urban mobility projects currently under execution in India. Once operational, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time, support sustainable transportation and improve access to residential and commercial hubs along the route.

With safety inspections nearing completion and the speed trial on the horizon, Chennai Metro is set to add another critical link to the city’s expanding rapid transit network.
