Chennai’s ₹3,500 Cr Elevated Corridor to Ease GST Road Congestion

Chennai’s traffic woes on the GST Road are set to ease with the upcoming 18.4 km elevated corridor between Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) and Mahindra City. The ₹3,500 crore project aims to streamline movement on this crucial route, which connects the city with southern and central Tamil Nadu.


The 18.4-km elevated corridor that is coming up on the GST Road in Chennai would ease traffic woes ahead of this stretch connecting Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) and Mahindra City. An ambitious project worth ₹3,500 crore, it proposes to streamline movement in this vital stretch, connecting the city to southern and central Tamil Nadu.

The six-lane elevated roadway will have entry and exit ramps at Iyyancherry Junction, Kattankulathur, and the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) crossing. Officials say that a detailed project report is to be reworked and will be released shortly, and construction would not entail land acquisition.

One of the busiest highways in Tamil Nadu, GST Road has been afflicted with **severe congestion especially, during festivals such as Deepavali and Pongal when thousands of people travel to their hometowns Project for Improved Conditions: This will improve traffic flow and reduce travel time, road safety by blackspot elimination.
Before this, NHAI had initially proposed a 27-km elevated corridor from Tambaram to Chengalpattu. However, due to high project costs and toll concerns, the plan was dropped in favor of multiple flyovers along the stretch.

The new elevated corridor from KCBT to Mahindra City is expected to provide a long-term solution for commuters and separate local and long-distance traffic, making travel safer and more efficient.
