Greater Chennai Corporation collected 5,323.42 metric tons of construction and demolition debris within just a week across seven zones during its week-long cleaning drive, beginning on January 7 and ending on January 13, which has focused on all street litter – garbage, construction waste, posters, and hoardings.

The highest collection was in the Teynampet zone, and it took away 883.17 metric tons of debris. Adyar at 831.72 metric tons takes the second rank, followed by Tondiarpet at 815 metric tons. Anna Nagar recorded 746.81 metric tons followed by Kodambakkam recording 732.35 metric tons and Royapuram at 695.95 metric tons. And Thiru Vi Ka Nagar recorded 618.42 metric tons.

It clears the roads, bus stands, parks, cemeteries, flyovers, areas below the flyovers, and underpasses in all the zones it organizes. It sends the collected waste, along with a fleet of 59 vehicles and special machinery to dumping grounds at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur. The cleaning process is going to reach the remaining eight zones including Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur in the coming days.

In a press release, the GCC urged residents to join hands with this initiative by disposing of their waste properly. It asked people not to litter in public areas and, through this campaign, informed them about 15 designated locations throughout the city for the proper disposal of construction and demolition debris.

This mega drive depicts the commitment of the GCC toward maintaining cleanliness and waste management in the city. The citizens are encouraged to take active participation in keeping Chennai clean and green through the guidelines followed in waste disposal.
