Bengaluru’s double-decker flyover, which is being built at the long-awaited Silk Board Junction, is set to be fully operational by mid-2025, bringing relief from possibly one of the city’s worst traffic bottlenecks. The lower portion of the structure will facilitate vehicular movement, while the upper deck will accommodate Namma Metro’s Yellow Line, which runs between RV Road and Bommasandra.

In July 2024, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) opened the elevated road partially, interspersing it with ramps that had been built over the existing Silk Board flyover. But, one-way traffic only towards Silk Board Junction – was allowed. To allow movement in the reverse direction, BMRCL has now raised most of the necessary piers to construct a new ramp from the HSR Layout to the BTM Layout.

BMRCL officials said construction is left of just four to five pillars along a stretch of nearly one kilometre. The 24-metre-high pillars will allow the ramp to overshoot the Silk Board Junction and the new Hosur Road ramp. When connected with the existing road flyover, the BTM Layout flyover will allow traffic to move towards the Ragigudda Metro station without signal intersections.

(Amidst all this, the double-decker flyover itself is part of the 19-km Yellow Line, but the absence of metro coaches has delayed the launch of the line itself, which is critical for connecting Electronics City. Besides these, BMRCL is also working at Silk Board Junction, where it is developing two metro stations with one on the western side for the Yellow Line and the other on the eastern side for the future Blue Line (Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport). To connect these stations, which are currently some 300 meters apart, a travelator will be placed in between.

The flyover’s complete opening is expected to relieve congestion at Silk Board, but some traffic signals will still be required for motorists going between Hosur Road, HSR Layout and the Madiwala area. However, the long-delayed project is an important milestone in a wide-ranging effort in Bengaluru to reduce traffic congestion on its roads and improve urban mobility.
