The Asian Development Bank has approved a $240 million loan to accelerate the expansion of the Chennai Metro Rail network, reinforcing the city’s push towards sustainable and reliable public transport. The funding forms part of a larger $780 million financing facility sanctioned in 2022 and will be utilised for the development of key stretches under Phase II of the project.
The fresh loan will support construction and system works across Metro Lines 3, 4 and 5, covering nearly 20 kilometres and adding 18 new stations to the network. These corridors are expected to significantly improve east west and north south connectivity across Chennai, easing traffic congestion and offering commuters a dependable alternative to private vehicles.
According to the Asian Development Bank, the new metro sections will be built with universal access features to ensure inclusivity for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and children. The infrastructure will also be designed to withstand extreme weather events, a critical requirement for a coastal city like Chennai that frequently experiences heavy rainfall and flooding.
Mio Oka, Country Director for India at ADB, said the project will enable safer, faster and more reliable daily travel for residents while supporting Chennai’s transition towards low carbon urban development. He highlighted that sustained investments in mass rapid transit systems are essential for reducing emissions, improving air quality and supporting economic productivity in large urban centres.
The loan will fund civil works as well as advanced systems such as power supply, traction, signalling and telecommunications. In addition, improvements to multimodal interchange areas are planned to enhance seamless transfers between the metro, buses and other modes of transport, making public transport more convenient and efficient for daily users.
Chennai Metro Phase II is a flagship infrastructure initiative for Tamil Nadu, aimed at transforming urban mobility over the next decade. With ADB’s continued financial support, the project is expected to maintain momentum and achieve completion of the supported sections by mid 2028, marking another important milestone in Chennai’s long term vision for integrated, climate resilient and people centric urban transport. The expansion is expected to support inclusive growth and future mobility.
