Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISL) in Bhadravathi has recorded a net profit for the third consecutive month, offering a positive indication for the financial performance of the historically loss-making steel plant.

According to Union Steel Minister H D Kumaraswamy, VISL posted a net profit of ₹33 lakh in July, followed by ₹1.71 crore in August and ₹1.96 crore in September. The three-month run of profits marks a notable improvement in the plant’s recent financial performance.

The improvement has also been reflected in the plant’s revenue. VISL’s net revenue increased to ₹51.87 crore in September, compared with ₹27.48 crore during the same period last year. In September 2025, the plant had reported a net loss of ₹3.78 crore.

Despite the recent improvement, VISL’s cumulative financial position remains under pressure. The plant’s net loss for the period through September 2026 stood at ₹2.03 crore. However, this represents a significant reduction from the ₹22.77 crore loss recorded during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The improvement of more than ₹20 crore in the cumulative loss position has been highlighted as an indication of progress in strengthening the plant’s finances.

Kumaraswamy attributed the improved performance to reforms introduced after he took charge as Union Steel Minister, along with continued monitoring and regular visits to the Bhadravathi facility. He also credited the plant’s workforce and management team for maintaining operational focus.

The latest numbers are particularly significant for VISL, which has faced financial challenges over the years. Sustaining profitability will now be important as the plant seeks to improve operational efficiency and strengthen its long-term financial position.

The Union Steel Minister has urged employees to maintain the momentum and continue efforts to improve efficiency. For VISL, the immediate challenge will be to convert the recent monthly profits into a sustained turnaround rather than a short-term improvement.

The September performance also comes as the broader Indian steel industry continues to navigate changing demand conditions, input costs and competitive pressures. For the Bhadravathi plant, continued operational improvements and disciplined financial management will remain key to building a more sustainable future.
