Kozhikode Set for Port-Led Urban Transformation Under Kerala’s Mission Samudra

Kozhikode is set to take on a broader role in Kerala’s infrastructure and economic landscape, with the state government planning to develop the northern city as a port city under its Mission Samudra initiative.

The focus is not limited to upgrading port infrastructure. The government wants port-led development to be closely integrated with Kozhikode’s wider urban economy, creating new opportunities in logistics, tourism, technology and employment.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan said work had already begun towards developing the ports in Kozhikode. Plans include logistics facilities, a container facilitation centre and transshipment infrastructure around the port areas. A cruise terminal is also being considered, subject to the availability of suitable land.

The city’s connectivity is expected to receive a major boost as part of the broader development plan. The proposed Kozhikode Light Metro is currently undergoing feasibility and other studies. Construction has not yet started, but the government has indicated that implementation will begin once the studies are completed. The state’s budget has allocated ₹20 crore towards initial work for Light Metro projects in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram.

Kozhikode International Airport is another key component of the infrastructure strategy. The government plans to strengthen the airport’s role within the proposed aviation hub network covering Kerala’s four international airports. Better connectivity between Kozhikode city and the airport is also being planned.

Tourism and cultural infrastructure will form another part of the city’s expansion. Land has been identified for an M T Vasudevan Nair cultural park, with work expected to begin within three months. The proposed development is planned to include theatres, art galleries, traditional art venues and five-star hotels, while highlighting Kozhikode’s cultural heritage.

The government is also proposing a Cyberpark to expand the city’s technology and employment base. Kozhikode could additionally be considered for the proposed Knowledge Valley project, which aims to bring campuses of leading international universities, subject to suitable land being available.

Road connectivity is also on the priority list, including bridge projects such as the Mankavu bridge. Technical assistance from the National Institute of Technology, Kozhikode, is expected to support several development initiatives.

Together, these projects indicate a broader attempt to position Kozhikode as a diversified urban and economic centre, with ports, transport, aviation, tourism and technology developing as interconnected growth drivers.
