Saint-Gobain Eyes 100 Plants in India as Sustainable Construction Demand Grows

Saint-Gobain is planning a significant expansion of its manufacturing footprint in India, with the French building materials major expecting to have at least 100 plants in the country within the next five years.

The company currently operates 82 facilities in India, serving both domestic customers and export markets. Saint-Gobain India chief executive officer Sreedhar N said the company remains bullish on India’s construction growth and expects to continue investing across multiple product categories.

The expansion comes as sustainable construction gains importance in India’s rapidly growing building and infrastructure market. According to Sreedhar, a large portion of India’s built environment is yet to be developed, creating considerable scope for newer construction technologies and energy-efficient materials.

Over the next five years, Saint-Gobain plans to invest significantly in gypsum and insulation, while also setting up a new manufacturing facility for glass wool and stone wool. The company is also looking to expand its core glass manufacturing capacity and increase investments in construction chemicals.

The focus, Sreedhar said, is on strengthening the company’s ability to supply sustainable construction solutions to the Indian market while supporting the country’s evolving building standards and requirements.

Saint-Gobain has already established India as one of its major global profit centres. Its Indian operations currently generate close to €2 billion in revenue, with the country ranking among the company’s top five profit centres worldwide.

The company has also set an ambitious growth target for the Indian business, aiming to triple revenue over the next decade. India is currently the third-largest contributor to Saint-Gobain’s global bottom line, according to Sreedhar.

Beyond the domestic market, the company sees further potential in exports. Saint-Gobain is targeting markets including Southeast Asia and Australia, which could provide additional growth opportunities for its India manufacturing network.

With investments spanning glass, insulation, gypsum and construction chemicals, Saint-Gobain’s expansion signals growing confidence in India’s long-term construction market and the increasing demand for sustainable building materials.
