Hyderabad Metro Old City Expansion Gets Fresh Push as Telangana Fast-Tracks 7.5-Km Corridor

Hyderabad’s long-awaited Metro expansion through the Old City is moving closer to the next stage, with the Telangana government stepping up preparations for the proposed corridor between MGBS and Chandrayangutta.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to accelerate road-widening works along the 7.5-km stretch and initiate the tender process for the Metro project. The directions were issued during a review meeting on the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2 expansion.

The MGBS-Chandrayangutta corridor is an important component of the proposed expansion, as it will extend Metro connectivity into the densely populated Old City area. Faster progress on road widening is expected to help clear one of the key preparatory requirements before major Metro construction activity begins.

Reddy has also asked officials to consult Delhi Metro on the technology that would be most suitable for the project. The move is aimed at ensuring that the proposed corridor uses an appropriate technology solution based on its operational and passenger requirements.

Passenger capacity was another issue discussed during the review. The Chief Minister directed officials to assess the expected passenger load and make arrangements for additional Metro coaches. Trains could also be augmented with extra coaches wherever necessary to handle rising ridership.

The government’s push comes as Hyderabad continues to expand as a major business, technology and urban centre. Improved public transport connectivity is increasingly important as the city experiences growing traffic volumes and development across its major corridors.

The Old City Metro expansion is expected to improve access to key commercial and residential areas while providing an alternative to road-based transport for daily commuters.

During the meeting, Reddy also reviewed preparations for the Invest Telangana Global Summit scheduled for December. Officials were asked to prepare plans for the event, including arrangements to recognise prominent personalities from different business sectors.

The Chief Minister also sought a detailed report on investments attracted and the progress achieved following the previous year’s summit.
