Havelock Bridge Redevelopment: Andhra Pradesh Sanctions ₹47 Crore to Transform Heritage Landmark into Tourism Hub

The Andhra Pradesh government has approved a ₹47 crore redevelopment project to restore the iconic Havelock Bridge across the Godavari River as part of the Akhanda Godavari Project. The initiative is aimed at preserving one of India’s most significant railway heritage structures while transforming it into a modern tourism destination ahead of the Godavari Pushkarams 2027.

Constructed in 1897 during British rule, the Havelock Bridge stretches approximately 2.7 kilometres across the Godavari River and is supported by 56 steel spans. For decades, it served as a vital railway connection before being decommissioned in 1997. Despite remaining inactive for nearly three decades, the bridge has continued to hold historical and cultural significance for the region.

The redevelopment project seeks to combine heritage conservation with immersive visitor experiences. Plans include an AI-powered Time Travel Tunnel that will showcase the bridge’s history, an Aquarium Tunnel, a Hologram Zoo, a Space Gallery, heritage viewing decks, interactive lighting installations, laser shows, cultural performance spaces, selfie points, food courts and a ropeway. These attractions are expected to make the bridge a year-round destination for domestic and international tourists.

Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh said the project represents an important step in preserving an engineering landmark while creating a new tourism identity for Rajamahendravaram. According to the minister, the redevelopment will protect the historic structure and contribute to the city’s economic growth by attracting more visitors and supporting local businesses.

The project is also expected to generate employment during both the construction and operational phases. Improved tourism infrastructure around the Godavari River is likely to benefit hospitality, transport, retail and small businesses across the region.

The Havelock Bridge redevelopment reflects Andhra Pradesh’s broader strategy of revitalising heritage assets through modern infrastructure and technology. By preserving the bridge’s historic character while introducing contemporary attractions, the government aims to position Rajamahendravaram as one of India’s leading heritage tourism destinations before the Godavari Pushkarams 2027.
