
JSW Infrastructure’s ₹600 crore mechanisation project at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tamil Nadu is progressing according to schedule, with commercial commissioning expected in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2026-27. The project marks another major milestone in strengthening India’s port infrastructure and enhancing cargo handling capabilities along the country’s east coast.
The project focuses on the mechanisation of North Cargo Berth-III at VOC Port, one of southern India’s key maritime gateways. Once operational, the upgraded facility will be capable of handling 7 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of dry bulk cargo, significantly improving operational efficiency and reducing vessel turnaround time.
The development is being executed under a 30-year concession agreement, reinforcing JSW Infrastructure’s long-term commitment to expanding its presence in India’s port and logistics sector. The company has been steadily investing in modern infrastructure to support growing cargo volumes and improve supply chain efficiency across major ports.
The mechanised terminal will be equipped to handle a wide range of dry bulk commodities, including coal, limestone, gypsum, rock phosphate and copper concentrate. These materials are critical for industries such as power generation, cement, fertilisers and metal manufacturing, making the project strategically important for industrial growth across southern India.
VOC Port’s location on the east coast, combined with its strong rail and road connectivity, provides efficient access to major industrial clusters in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. The enhanced cargo handling infrastructure is expected to improve logistics efficiency, increase throughput and strengthen the port’s competitiveness in the dry bulk segment.
India’s growing industrial output and increasing demand for efficient logistics infrastructure have accelerated investments in port modernisation. Mechanised terminals play a crucial role in reducing operational delays, improving safety standards and enabling faster cargo evacuation, helping ports handle larger volumes with greater efficiency.
With work progressing as planned, the project is expected to play an important role in supporting regional trade, strengthening supply chains and expanding JSW Infrastructure’s cargo handling network. Once commissioned, the upgraded facility will further position VOC Port as a major hub for dry bulk cargo movement in southern India while contributing to the country’s long-term maritime infrastructure development.
