As India’s cement industry accelerates its transition toward sustainable manufacturing, Ambuja Cements has entered into a strategic partnership with UK-based clean technology company Leilac Limited to develop a commercial-scale low-carbon cement production project in Gujarat.
The project will be implemented at Ambuja Cements’ 6.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Sanghi cement plant in Sanghipuram, Kutch district. It is expected to become one of the world’s largest industrial-scale demonstration projects integrating carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technology for cement manufacturing.
The collaboration forms part of Ambuja Cements’ long-term decarbonisation roadmap and supports the company’s Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. As the company continues expanding its renewable energy capacity with nearly one gigawatt of captive green power, the new project is expected to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions generated during cement production.
Leilac’s advanced technology is designed to capture unavoidable process carbon dioxide while increasing the use of renewable electricity throughout manufacturing operations. The system also offers the potential to eliminate coal consumption entirely while allowing greater flexibility in the use of alternative fuels, significantly improving the environmental performance of cement production.
Following successful commercial demonstration, the facility could be expanded seven to eight times, enabling the capture of more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Such a scale would establish one of the most significant low-carbon cement production platforms globally and provide a replicable model for cement manufacturers in India and international markets.
Karan Adani, Director of Ambuja Cements, said the cement industry’s transition towards lower-carbon manufacturing requires technological innovation, strategic partnerships and long-term investments. He noted that the collaboration with Leilac represents an important milestone in evaluating next-generation solutions capable of reducing emissions while improving operational efficiency.
Daniel Rennie, Chief Executive Officer of Leilac Limited, stated that the partnership combines Ambuja Cements’ large-scale manufacturing expertise with Leilac’s carbon capture technology to demonstrate an economically viable and scalable pathway for producing low-carbon cement.
The partnership highlights the growing focus on sustainable construction materials as India’s infrastructure and real estate sectors continue to expand. With stricter environmental targets and increasing demand for greener building materials, technologies such as carbon capture are expected to become increasingly important in shaping the future of cement manufacturing.
