Reliance Industries Limited is taking a major leap in India’s digital infrastructure space with a planned investment of around ₹1.6 lakh crore to develop a large-scale data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The ambitious project is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s capabilities in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data processing, positioning India as a key global technology hub.

The proposed development will have a total capacity of 1.5 gigawatts, making it the largest data centre cluster in India. Once completed, it is also expected to surpass several global benchmarks, highlighting the scale at which Reliance Industries is planning its expansion in the digital ecosystem. The project has received approval from the Andhra Pradesh Investment Promotion Committee and will be implemented in multiple phases.

In the first phase, the company plans to establish a 500 MW data centre at Polipalli village, with commercial operations targeted to begin by October 2028. The second phase will add another 1 gigawatt of capacity by 2030, further strengthening the cluster’s capabilities. The development will be strategically located near the upcoming Bhogapuram airport, ensuring strong connectivity and logistical advantages.

The project will require approximately 935 acres of land, with around 300 acres allocated for the initial phase and the remaining land earmarked for future expansion. In addition to core data centre infrastructure, the project will also include a dedicated cable landing station and a desalination plant, ensuring reliable connectivity and sustainable water supply.

A key highlight of the initiative is its focus on renewable energy integration. The data centre cluster will be supported by a captive solar power and battery storage system, aligning with sustainability goals while reducing operational costs.

This investment underscores Reliance Industries’ long-term strategy to lead India’s digital transformation. It also reflects the growing importance of Andhra Pradesh, particularly Visakhapatnam, as an emerging hub for data centres and advanced technology infrastructure.
