India has marked a significant milestone in its industrial journey by returning to net exporter status for finished steel in the fiscal year 2026. This achievement represents a major shift after two years of being a net importer during the 2024 and 2025 cycles. According to recent data released by the ministry of steel, outbound shipments reached 6.6 million tonnes. This figure marginally surpassed the total imports which stood at 6.5 million tonnes.
The surge in exports was impressive with a growth of 35.9 percent compared to the previous year. Simultaneously, imports saw a sharp decline of 31.7 percent. This strategic shift allowed India to strengthen its footprint across vital global regions such as West Asia and Europe as well as Southeast Asia. The growth highlights the resilience of Indian manufacturers in finding new buyers even amidst global economic shifts.
On the home front, the steel industry continued its robust performance. Crude steel production climbed by 10.7 percent to reach approximately 168.4 million tonnes. Domestic consumption also stayed strong as it rose by about 8 percent to hit 164 million tonnes. These figures suggest that both internal development and external trade are moving in a positive direction.
Despite these gains, the sector faced some obstacles during the latter part of the fiscal year. Geopolitical tensions in West Asia caused disruptions in gas supplies and created shortages of industrial fuels like LPG. These factors threatened production continuity for several manufacturers. Additionally, while steel prices began to recover in early 2026 after a three year downward trend, profitability remained under pressure. Fluctuating raw material costs continue to be a challenge for the industry even as India solidifies its position on the global stage. This return to being a net exporter provides a foundation for future growth in the manufacturing sector.
